Some friends and I just headed up to the Muskoka region of Ontario, where an old college mate (Jerod) recently had a second-hand motorboat from a retiring Quebecois couple. He'd promised a few us a great weekend on the water, on the agreement that we help get this secondhand motorboat seaworthy.

This was, however, a bit of challenging. Most of the paint on the hull was rusting, the engine was in dire need of a tune-up, and the pontoon seats were flaky and frayed. It wasn't really the weekend of pleasure we'd been looking to, but it was a fun (or at a minimum interesting) one nevertheless.

It began with a half-dozen stops at nearby hardware, boating and home decoration shops, haphazardly picking up the components we required to get the "Rose of Conakry" (as Jerod had named her) shipshape once more. To my wonder, the pontoon boat seats proved to be the toughest to spruce up.

While the majority of the mechanical problems could be fixed with either a bit of oil or a reluctantly-purchased replacement part, the pontoon seats were strongly fused into the boat itself, rendering it difficult to replace with removing a considerable part of the furnishings.

Our initial attempts to fix them together with transparent tape and adhesive yielded unsuccessful - we made the pontoon boat seat similar of Frankenstein's monster. Conversely, we ended up just ripping out most of the fabric, and replacing it with some off-white material we'd chemically treated for water damage.

Regrettably, the "Rose of Conakry" will never possess the fresh-off-the-line appeal it must have had years ago, but I almost prefer it this way, it appears robust, lived in. Around Sunday afternoon we ultimately managed to take the "Rose" out onto the lake, where we spent a couple of hours of kicking back beers and watching for the fish.

Are you currently brand new to the thrilling realm of boating and marine adventures? If you have recently obtained your personal vessel and are beginning to plan for some times on the water, you could be compiling a list of different gear products that you might need or wish to obtain to make your water experience that much more pleasurable. One particular product that many anglers love to have with them when out to sea, is some sort of fishfinder like that of the Lowrance X67C.

In this article, we'll discuss the particular merits associated with owning a fishfinder or some other type of awesome marine GPS gadget and what you ought to be seeking in the event that you are looking at acquiring this type of device for your own boat.

Fishfinders are one distinct function that is occasionally serviced through standard marine GPS models. Sometimes it is possible to get something which serves the spot locator needs, similar to that of a car GPS unit, but in addition includes fishfinder and chartplotting performance. You may prefer to spend a little more money and choose a unit that will provide multiple functions since having a GPS while you're on the river would certainly prove useful in terms of course-plotting.

Fishfinders and other sea navigational units appear in a variety of dimensions and the Lowrance X67C Fishfinder mentioned previously is one of the smaller designs that are out there these days. Using a scaled-down model really can be a sensible choice, specifically if you work with it on a smaller fishing boat or do not want to deal with the greater costs that you might find with larger GPS models.

If you are simply looking for something which provides you with the basic fishfinding functions, a compact unit might be all that is necessary. At a minimum, you ought to look for something which will recognize fish that are beneath you as well as fish that are hidden. Most units may have this particular function. The Lowrance X67C Color Fishfinder model additionally exhibits the fish targets with color and also at high boat rates of speed which is a definite plus with regards to overall performance.

You may also end up being interested to locate something which will permeate a certain long distance underneath the vessel. The needs you have in terms of coverage will be based a great deal on where specifically you expect to do the most fishing and what the range required would be. Any kind of standard system would probably meet the needs of most fishing fans that essentially fish as a leisure activity. When fishing is your selected career and you do this for a living, you'll probably want to consider higher end products that could handle just about almost any situation and function that you could envision to be able to land your catch during the day.

Whatever the particular model fishfinder that you do decide to go with, make sure you carry out sufficient research on the internet before you make your ultimate decision. There are numerous features and operations that it can be recommended to study different consumer testimonials to discover just how other people tend to be liking a particular model that you are thinking about.

How often have you gone on a fishing expedition only to return with zero to very few fish to show for it? Sure, you have a wonderful time while away, but this can be disappointing to say the least. There are many great technologies available today for fisherman and boating enthusiasts. Here, we will discuss some benefits of having a good marine GPS or fishfinder system and specifically talk about one of the best options out there which is the Humminbird 1197c SI Combo.

Some of the features and great benefits of using a fishfinder system include:

1. Chartplotting GPS system
This allows you to chart your course in the water and easily monitor where you are going and where you have come from. There are many bonus features in most units that include mapping aspects and marking capabilities.

2. Side Imaging Capability
This gives clear images of the fish around you, most often spanning 400+ feet on either side.

3. Different Beam Views
Use a narrow view mode to see the fish that are hiding at the bottom many feet below your boat. The wide beam view gives great coverage for a broader focus, allowing you to see the fish and bait fish that are close by.

4. Advanced Sonar Technology
The awesome advanced technology utilized in a system such as the Humminbird 1197c model, allows for a clear competitive advantage over those anglers that are not using such an extensive system.

5. Take Screen Pictures and Sonar Recordings
This allows you to save certain information that you can then go back to time and time again as necessary.

6. Important Fish ID Capability
This portion of the fishfinder system may be the most critical as far as contributing to your ability to locate large amounts of fish. The system marks a fish with a little icon that varies in size and color depending on the size, location and depth of the fish relative to your boat. This feature alone can increase your catch!

7. Split Screen Zoom Mode
This allows you to see and distinguish information that is very close together helping to clarify information that you may be picking up while in the other modes.

8. Special Truearch Technology
This is an advanced feature of the Humminbird 1197c SI system and it helps to eliminate noise and information from your screen that is not likely to be the fish that you are targeting. This mode will help you to accurately assess and pinpoint the size, location and depth of your fish targets.

9. Images are updated on your screen in real time.
There is no lag time with these great units so you do not need to worry about missing out on important changes in the information around you. Real time accuracy is a must have for these types of units for obvious reasons.

10. Most systems include a sonar zoom view to increase resolution as well as a circular flasher view mode.

As you can see, there are many advantages to investing in such a cool system. If you are an avid fisherman, most likely you would not regret owning something that would cause your daily catch to increase as much as this has the ability to do.

Are you new to angling or boating? Perhaps you have already been thinking about including a popular fishfinder like the Garmin Fishfinder 400c as a part of your equipment checklist. In this article, we are going to go over what a fishfinder is precisely and how it could benefit you on your angling and boating activities.

A fishfinder is a unit used in commercial angling or with angling hobby fanatics to have the ability to effortlessly find large schools of fish while out there within your boat. It is a higher frequency sonar system that sends out sound waves towards the bottom part of the water. This causes echoes to come back from the bottom which in turn lets you know the length from the fish or other things to the fishing boat. These devices come with a wide range of benefits and uses and some will even include a basic depth finder capability, GPS navigation, chartplotting characteristics, mapping as well as climate programs as well as many other possibilities.

Firstly, you need to clearly decide on your financial allowance and what you need to spend on this kind of solution. Fishfinders come in a wide array of pricing possibilities that'll be caused by what characteristics they incorporate and to some degree the manufacturer that you select since a few are of much better quality compared to others. The Garmin 400c, for instance runs around $380 which may be regarded as lower to mid-range so far as pricing goes. You'll be able to certainly expect to find rates of $1000 and upwards if you are searching for a product that features all the functionality mentioned above.

Once you've chosen your financial allowance, you'll want to begin comparing designs and brands to find the types that jump out at you as possessing a very good popularity. Garmin is definitely a great company to go with as could be Lowrance and Humminbird with regards to high quality fishfinders and other boating units. Carrying out just a little bit of quick study online, brings up the big competitors within the market for you.

Next, you'll likely want to check out the type and quality of the display. Several elements here to think about would be the measurements of the monitor and whether it is a liquid-crystal display (LCD) screen or a cathode ray-tube (CRT) monitor. You will also need to examine the actual resolution which will be in a pixel format description. A final factor with regards to the display would be the legibility of the screen within direct sunlight which will become important depending on where you have the fishfinder situated within the fishing boat.

Whether or not you select the Garmin 400c Fish Finder or some other style of marine navigational unit that also contains fish finding capabilities, make sure to seek information before making that final purchase. It is certainly worth it to spend some time studying online to compare and contrast several makes and models as well as reading through what other consumers have to say about a specific unit. Taking this time in advance will save you the frustration of making a wrong preference that will not truly match your current needs.

Technology has made fishing a great deal easier. Just think for a moment how hard it must have been in the past when they had to use the trial and error method to locate fish and determine depth.

Fish finders are really useful devices that use sonar to find the fish under the water and as a result they increase the fisherman's opportunities of catching fish. There are many different types of fish finders on the market today, so regardless of the type of fish you are wanting to catch, a fish finder can be a great help.

There are two basic types of screens used with fish finders. The first type of screen is known as the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) and the second is known as a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). CRTs have lost popularity since the invention of the LCD screens. This is because LCD screens are able to display high resolutions. If you find a screen that has been labeled as a TFT screen, it is just another version of the LCD screens.

For the average fisherman the CRT screen is the most sensible choice. It costs less than an LCD unit, provides very good clarity and is easy to read in direct sunlight.

Another point you need to consider when on the lookout for a fish finder is your budget; you do not want to get your heart set on something that is out of your price range. The best way to deal with this is to search for those finders that are within your allowed price range and forget about the rest.

Keep in mind when deciding on a budget that a colored screen will cost more than a non-colored screen. It is most often the case that a more regular fisherman will be willing to spend more on a fish finder than the occasional fisherman.

Another technical consideration of the fish finder is the frequency it uses. Kilohertz (kHz) is the measurement used with frequency and is used in the water to locate the exact position of the fish and where the best place to cast a line will be.

The screen on the finder will not be able to tell you precisely the type of fish available, just where groups of fish are located, so it is important to know the depth. The best kHz is between 80 and 125 kHz, because the higher the frequency, the narrower is the signal range cone and the greater the detail available to you.

One other important aspect to consider is the inclusion of a global positioning system. GPS fish finders are fantastic to use when you are going for a weekend trip and you are not that familiar with the area. They allow you to record any position in the system, which means you can find it again any time you want, without any problems.

Whether you choose a regular fish finder or one with GPS, it will prove to be a fantastic addition to your other fishing equipment. Just imagine how many more fish you will be able to catch with a great fish finder and how easily you can get back to that great little hideaway if you have to leave for any reason.

How your bait can really make a big difference to your catches in hidden and very obvious ways!

The scientific information available on essential dietary needs of carp most often does not take into account the presence of natural food in the presence of a test food item such as that of milk casein and gelatine. In fact it really makes a big difference when you consider that a carp is fully designed to fully digest and utilise its natural food items as opposed to an artificial food item composed of many foods such as in a boilie bait or pellet designed for salmon, trout or even specifically designed for carp! The actual energy and nutrient requirements compared to the actual biological conversion and energy supplied may well not be as great nor as efficient as thought by anglers.

When most carp anglers think about baits they most frequently think about flavours, protein or other nutritional aspects, but very many miss all the other aspects of bait that induce carp feeding behaviour and curiosity etc, in general. One important variable factor in our fisheries is the changing levels of the abundance of natural food items present which can impact upon catches on baits very much at certain times and we can exploit this to make catches easier with more focus on ground bait and bait design. It can be tough to induce natural feeding carp to eat our baits unless we truly exploit the biochemical systems and other senses which carp use to detect their natural food so effectively.

How things have changed in carp fishing since I began in the 1970's when most carp anglers caught single and double-figure fish and a carp weighing over twenty pounds was very special indeed and a thirty pound fish was a fish of a life-time and something of an object for closer scientific scrutiny! Where a can of luncheon meat or a loaf of bread used to catch carp, now many anglers will throw into their swim a couple of thousand boilies, many kilograms of pellets or particle baits and still expect to catch without waiting a week for all this to be cleared before getting a bite. The impact of the general trend towards use of more bait as free bait, chum or ground bait is often to do with improving angler confidence, but it can very much improve fish confidence too and when done appropriately seriously multiplies catches.

It is true that the majority of the fish you could fish available to you prior to the boom in carp fishing in the UK were of double and single figures and it has been said that at that time there were as many twenty pound fish in Kent waters as the rest of the waters in the UK put together. New carp anglers in the UK today could never fully appreciate just what an achievement catching a twenty pound carp meant back in the 1970's and early 1980's; and the opportunity to actually fish a water that held a thirty pound fish was incredibly exciting experience! To many carp anglers fishing just a couple of decades ago, the first challenge was actually to locate a water containing any big carp over twenty or thirty pounds at all, and it might seem crazy to consider that to me it was once an exhilarating thrill to fish a water containing fish over twenty pounds, now having hooked a carp over eighty pounds a couple of years ago.

I recall in the early 1990's the first guy to catch twenty carp weighing over twenty pounds in a season on my Essex syndicate lake when I had only 7 over twenty that season myself, but only took 2 years later I achieved this myself and it seems that carp weights have been accelerating over the last 2 decades much to the pleasure of us anglers! Anyone who really does their homework can achieve the capture of twenty carp in a week of around twenty pounds or over, and the waters that can produce this will tend to produce quite a few bigger bonus specimens too. For the average angler, the effective application and leverage of bait is critical in being able to consistently achieve big catches of carp and the more you can get to understand about bait applications and how baits works, the more consistently good your results can be with the least wastage in bait!

I just realised it is now 18 years since I had a personal milestone catch of twenty carp whose average weight was just less than twenty pounds, including a mid-thirty pound carp, in just 5 days. My homemade bait recipe design especially, and the way I introduced my free baits, made all the difference in achieving this exceptional catch at that Essex syndicate water back in 1991 and UK carp have had twenty years since to grow fat on the tonnes of bait very many thousands more carp anglers have been introducing to UK carp waters all year round! If you consider that carp soon get very conditioned to baits and practice avoiding hook baits in many carp waters 24 hours a day, the significance of knowing that bit more about bait, how it works, and how to apply it in new and creative ways is obviously highly important to consistent success today.

Bait design is very important and the nature of the free baits you use in order to get fish into an excited feeding state and drawn into your swim, hopefully to make a mistake with your hook bait is crucial; even in exceptionally prolific French and Spanish waters where 60 fish of over twenty pounds has been achieved by my friends in just 3 days. In the UK high-profile anglers are very much promoters of innovative baits and applications and the leverage of various bait substances and forms of recipes is a very big part of their ongoing success. Bait is important not merely as an edge in itself but as the whole basis of your ongoing success and so belittling the subject is rather missing the point that carp senses can be manipulated in our favour over and over again big-time...

Why not find out more how to maximise the money you spend on your baits in winter and spring and achieve better catches?! See these expert tips proven to work for more cold water carp again and again and save you money! Use these tips to help you right now!

Carp do not digest bait very well in colder conditions so it is extremely vital you design and select your baits and ground baits for exactly this situation to maximise your greatest chances of bites and literally in effect stop actually wasting good money on bait! Of course one way to do this is use as little bait as possible, but this is only part of the solution and does not maximise your chances because you will not necessarily be applying bait and baiting in the optimum ways possible for best results. Many anglers will choose to utilise water-soluble PVA products in combination with whole or crushed boilies, yet you still have to pay for the PVA of course, however it baits-up exactly where your hook bait is, so drawing most attention to it without filling fish up.

In ground baiting for winter and spring carp it is wise to pre-bait if at all possible and then apply minimal bait while actually fishing, perhaps using soluble pellets, stick or method or spod mixes incorporating broken boilies as opposed to whole boilies at this time. You choice of what to ground bait with and how to do it is a skill and art form that very many carp anglers really need to develop far more as it is vital in manipulating suitable carp feeding behavioural responses to your hook baits! Ground bait using bread is a very reliable method and almost anything excluding indigestible oils can be added; for example boilie base mix and homemade boilie liquid additives and foods.

If you choose to exploit bread in winter and spring you will find it is not necessarily a small fish ground bait base; in fact far from it! In the coldest of nights you can get bites from big carp over bread-based ground baits and of course, know fish are gorging on free bait very little without actually sampling your hook baits with this method. Boilies in standard bottom bait, or pop-up bait or critically-balanced form etc all are reliable hook baits and always will be.

Increase your bite rate by improving the effective addtives and ingredients in your baits and ground baits that induce more sampling of hook baits having not fed fish up on free baits first! Water-solubility and digestible potential of your baits is paramount. Pellets and boilies made with little oil as possible (that make baits less digestible and less effective in cold water) are very highly recommended!

The high oil pellets usually associated with best effectiveness in warmer water temperatures, such as the infamous halibut pellets are not so great in low temperatures. Low oil pellets which are going to encourage far more prolonged feeding and better bait digestion are hugely preferable. The low oil pellets water-soluble attractors and feeding stimulators etc, will be far more able to disperse attraction more effectively in cold water, in contrast to high oil halibut pellets.

Glugs and soaks based on liquid proteins, spleen and liver extracts, and things like herb and spice terpenes and flavour components like butyric acid and so on, really can help catches now. Extra liquid foods and boosting attraction substances will multiply the performance and catch rates on hook baits and ground baits ranging from bread to boilies, pellets, particles and even maggots and fake baits. Thinking far more about your winter and spring hook baits and ground baits, and their incredibly important method and rate of application is so underestimated by very many carp anglers; try to stimulate carp senses as much as possible and build on your knowledge of tips and edges to draw on!

When the huge importance of the relationships between carp senses and your effective (or ineffective) choices of hook baits and ground baits become cornerstones of your fishing attack, you will not stop until you have read as much as possible on this subject and gathered an extremely effective arsenal to stop you wasting as much money on blanks and wasted bait as possible; so keep reading on...

Don't let the summer-time heat ruin your fishing. By June or July it starts to really heat up, making most people want to call it quits early in the day. I think this is unfortunate, because some of the best fishing around is available, if you just go a little bit later. At night everything cools down to make for a much more comfortable and exciting experience. This is one of my favorite insider secrets, and I'm here to tell you how to do.

There are many bad things that can happen while fishing at night if you aren't careful. For this reason you should never fish along at night-time. Here are some tips to keep you safe:

* Your fishing partner should be aware of the aware of the area you are fishing in and your surrounds.

* While navigating, wear your P.D.F.'s.

* Be sure to leave a trip plan with someone back home.

* Plan your wade, where you want to start your first wade, to your second or third, you may not ever have to leave your first spot!

HOW: Once you are settled in at the first point, lighting is your next thing to focus on. Your boat should have an anchor light, which you need to turn on now. This alerts other boaters in the area, and acts as a guide for you in the dark. You will also want to pick up some LED headlamps from your local sporting goods store (don't forget batteries!) to give you hands free light while wade fishing.

A glo-stick is another useful item to have while out on the water. Drape one of these around your neck and let it hang off your back to keep boaters (and hopefully your buddy's lure) away. In case of an emergency or dead batteries you can also use this as a backup light to make your way back to the boat. Don't get too far apart from your partner, you need to stay within talking distance at all times.

WHEN: I have had my best luck around a full moon. The moon light helps silhouette your baits, thus making for any easy target for a hungry trout out on the prowl! Try tying a 10 to 12 inch leader to the first snap ring, next to the treble hook. Rig a 1/6th oz jig head with a plum or morning glory colored plastic (dark colors) and tie it on the leader (called Donk's tangler).

I know what you're thinking, but just try it and you will be surprised. Work it the same way you would the top water. The fish will hit the soft plastic every time! I like to fish with braided line (Power Pro), it allows you to feel what you can't see. You will know when you have a hook up!

Major feeding times, according to Solunar tables, are a great time to fish. I use a 5 hour time-frame around what the tables call these prime times. It's no guarantee but has worked for me in the past.

WHERE: There are many places in South Texas to go for Trophy Trout. I fish all around Baffin Bay, including Alazan Bay and East Kleberg point. Hopefully these tips work well for you, TIGHT LINES!
