Minnesota tourism offers some strange opportunities for fun. One of them is the World Famous Fishhouse Parade in Aitkin. Where else would you be able to see main street covered with decorated fishhouses doing down the street in a parade? The owners find a type of decorating idea they think will be funnier, more bizarre or tell a better story then their neighbors and off they go. This celebration of the coming of winter is a great way to prepare for the cold days to come.

The parade and celebration are held the day after Thanksgiving. Main Street comes alive with the floats, music and fun. You won't believe what some of the fishhouses look like as they go down the street headed for the 365 lakes in the surrounding area. If you can think of bizarre, then you probably can imagine what the humor of these hearty people can come up with to beat their neighbors out for the winner!

You may want to try your hand at ice fishing. It is a sport that is different from any other. You can sit in your warm fishhouse, drill your hole in the ice and go for the big walleye that got away from you this summer. For more information contact the chamber.

Fishing trips may be taking a back seat to fine restaurants and pulsing nightlife, but Miami fishing charter boat captains are still enjoying steady business. With the Gulf Stream so close, anglers can enjoy a fishing expedition catching grouper, tuna, dolphins, kingfish and more.

So, if you're planning a Miami deep-sea fishing experience, try checking out the area's top four marinas - the Crandon Park Marina, Haulover Beach Marina, Miami Beach Marina and the Bayside Marketplace. Each offers something a little different and a wide range of captains and ships to choose from.

Miami Crandon Park Marina

The Crandon Park Marina is home to some of the best charter boat captains and fishing guides in the area. The marina has an international reputation for Miami fishing charter boat companies that offer high quality service and guaranteed catches. It's located at 4000 Crandon Blvd, and charters typically cost around $700 for a full day or $500 for a half day.

Haulover Beach Park

Head down Collins Avenue in Miami Beach and you'll find the Haulover Beach Park Marina just steps away from the infamous Haulover Beach nudist beach section. Perhaps its the area's proximity to the Gulf Stream, but the Haulover Marina is home to the largest drift and charter fleet in South Florida. You can also call ahead at 305-947-3525 for recommendations and fishing updates.

Haulover Beach Marina is busy, with numerous boats to choose from, but recommended charters include the Helen C, Haulover Charter Company and the Kelley Fleet.

The Miami Beach Marina

The majority of boats docked at the Miami Beach Marina are private vessels, but there are a number of private fishing charters. Recommended captains and fleets include Miami Beach Charters, the Reward Fleet and the Sissy Bay.

To find the Miami Beach Marina, just take a stroll down the MacArthur Causeway or call them at (305) 673-6000.

Bayside Marketplace

The Bayside Marketplace is known for its relaxed vibe and hidden treasures. If you're tired of the high rates and competition at nearby Haulover Beach and Crandon Park, Bayside Marketplace is the place to go to find new captains, great deals and a friendly experience.

Average Costs

Typically, a small Miami fishing charter boat will cost between $450 and $500 for a half-day tour, providing you with everything except your food and drinks.

However, if you're on more of a budget, you can book passage on a group boat for about $30. Many of these boats also offer a 50-50 plan, where you can sell or take half your catch, while they sell or take the other half.

If a fishing venture or fishing trip in the beauty of Alaska isn't your gig but you love your time as an angler on the water, then how about a fishing expedition at the other end of the U.S. in Florida?.

Fort Lauderdale sport fishing is one of the area's biggest tourism generators. Because Fort Lauderdale and its nearby suburbs provides both saltwater and freshwater fishing, anglers can enjoy a deep sea experience, leisurely fly fishing or even bottom fishing.

Because sport fishing is so popular in Fort Lauderdale, you won't have a hard time locating a charter boat or fishing guide company. However, for the most current information on prices, quality companies and pier locations, try the resources below.

The International Game Fish Association World Fishing Center

The World Fishing Center, run by the IGFA (International Game Fish Association) is an incredible 3-acre park, museum and library that's also home to a virtual reality sport fishing simulator. Anglers can practice reeling in a computer-generated catch, browse the library resources or even find a list of recommended local guides and charter companies.

You can visit the World Fishing Center daily between 10am and 6pm, or you can call them at 1-954-927-2628 and ask to speak with a librarian. The IGFA has a website at igfa.org. The site even lets you search for IGFA-certified captains in the Fort Lauderdale area.

Fort Lauderdale's Hall of Fame Marina

The Hall of Fame Marina, on Seabreeze Boulevard, is full of captains and charter fishing companies, all clamoring for your Fort Lauderdale sport fishing business. Going down to take a look lets you inspect the boats in person, develop a rapport with local captains and often garner a better price.

Fort Lauderdale's Pier 66

Like the Hall of Fame Marina, the Pier 66 Marina is another hot spot for some of Fort Lauderdale's biggest and best fishing charter companies. The marina can be found on SE 17th Street or by phone at 954-525-6666. Again, ask your hotel concierge or the IGFA for a recommended boat and captain.

Hillsboro Inlet Charters

Actually located in Pompano Beach, Hillsboro Charters are recommended by both Fodor's Florida guide and Frommer's. The company operates over a dozen charter vessels and tracks marlin, shark, sailfish and pompano. You can contact them by phone at 954-943-8222 to make a reservation.

Average Prices and Charter Rates

For bottom fishing, most boats charge about $40 per person for a 4-hour trip and will typically include reel, rod and bait. For private charters, expect to pay around $350 for a six-person, half-day trip and about $600 for a full day adventure.

For the frugal fisher or those looking for a quieter Fort Lauderdale sport fishing experience, pier fishing may be the way to go. Places like Pompano Beach, Lauderdale by the Sea and Deerfield Beach all offer fishing piers that range from free to $5 for a full day of use. Rod and reel rentals are also available.

If you're planning an Alaska float fishing trip, the key word is "planning." During peak season, quality lodges will book up fast and rates are high, but planning ahead can avoid both disappointment and excessive costs.

So, plan ahead, book early and know the best places to be. To find out more on how to make your Alaskan fishing trip a hit, keep reading for tips on what to bring, the best season and where to stay.

What to Pack

Because the temperature can vary radically in Alaska - from a hot noon sun to a freezing cold night - you want clothes that will layer, dry quickly and keep you both warm and protected. Opt for clothing made from quick dry fabric like smart wool or a performance blend and choose pieces that can layer. Ideally, you want long-sleeve shirts and pants that will protect you from both the sun and bugs.

Before you start packing all your heavy float fishing gear, double check with your lodge or charter company to see what is and isn't included in your package. Of course, pack your favorite floats and lures, but many charter companies include larger equipment and safety gear.

And last but not least, the best place to spend your money is on solid rain gear. Though Gore-Tex is expensive and breathable, it's actually not fully waterproof and will eventually start to seep after a full day of heavy rain. PVC can be hot and uncomfortable, but its impenetrable. So, whether you choose PVC or Gore-Tex, weigh your options, consider whether you're staying in a lodge or out in the wilderness - and choose accordingly.

The Best Time to Go Float Fishing in Alaska

The best time to go on an Alaska float fishing in Alaska is from June to September. The weather is great, the salmon are spawning, the trout are plentiful and the fishing is amazing. Unfortunately, this is also peak tourism season. That means you need to plan ahead, reserve early and book in advance.

Hot Fishing Spots in Alaska

The best fishing spots in Alaska are

* The Kenai River, a water known for its huge salmon
* The Copper River Delta, a river delta teeming with salmon and trout
* Bristol Bay, an angler's paradise and home to hundreds of remote lodges, and
* Kodiak Island, an island oasis that's remote, isolated and crammed with fish

It's hard not to have a successful float fishing vacation, but with a little planning you can make any trip a great one. Just remember to hit the best fishing spots, go at the right time and pack appropriately. Also, always check with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Sport Fish Division before you book a lodge or charter company. Their website is available at sf.adfg.state.ak.us.

For an exciting overview of some of Alaska's most popular lodges and fishing tours, read on.

The Ultima Thule Lodge in Wrangell-St. Elias (ultimathulelodge.com)

Remote and pristine, the Ultima Thule Lodge is situated in the middle of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, the country's largest, and has been listed by National Geographic as the area's premiere luxury Alaska fly fishing trips company.

The lodge can arrange almost any type of day trip, but a lot of their focus is on fly fishing in Moose Valley. However, if your interest is fishing experiences, make sure you book in advance to get there during the peak salmon migration period.

The company sets itself apart from other fishing lodges by offering a range of activities, making it a great choice for an extended stay, family fishing trip or corporate adventure. Side trips include glacier stops, white water rafting, skiing, or wilderness hikes.

However, if you and your group want a more rustic or self-catered experience, you may want to look elsewhere. Ultima Thule is known for luxury, not wilderness expeditions.

Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge (sadiecove.com)

Featured on ESPN, the Discovery Channel, the Environmental Magazine, "E", The Travel Channel, National Geographic and Forbes' magazine, Sadie Cove is widely known as one of the continent's best eco-lodges. The lodge is run completely off the grid on a non-polluting wind, solar and hydro energy system.

Rates are fairly reasonable at Sadie Cove, however they do charge extra for privately chartered or fly-in Alaska fly fishing trips. That said, their peak summer rate of four hundred dollars per day includes all your daily meals, use of all the lodge facilities (like the sauna), fishing equipment, housekeeping, wireless Internet and even an on-site pool.

Drifter's Lodge on the Kenai River (907-595-5555)

If you're looking for a more rustic experience that centers it attention almost exclusively on fly fishing, Drifter's Lodge is a great choice. The lodge offers a more down-to-earth Alaskan experience and has been featured in National Geographic, the Lonely Planet and Time magazine. For fly fishing, their draw is on the fall season when the trout are at their peak.

The lodge employs expert, local guides who know the best spots on the Kenai River and the perfect flies and casting techniques. Their catches and trips include Alaska salmon, Dolly Varden trout and, of course, rainbow trout. With on-site lessons and guided expeditions, some of the best Alaska fly fishing trips can be found right here.

Alaska float fishing, also known as angling, is some of the best in the world. The salmon are massive, the scenery spectacular and the fishing adventure is unbeatable. For an overview of angling, good angling sites in Alaska and where to look for more information, keep reading.

Float Fishing Explained

Angling is a method or type of sport fishing. The hook is attached to a line and fishing rod, and it's basically the most popular form of recreational fishing, as opposed to nets. A float is used to suspend the bait and also serve as a bit indicator. So, when a fish bites the bait, the float moves and the fisherman knows to pull his line.

Float Fishing Licenses

When planning an Alaska float fishing vacation, remember that you'll need a fishing license, and the cost is different for non-state residents. A tourist's fishing license in Alaska is $20 per day, $35 for a 3-day stay, $55 for seven days and $80 for fourteen days.

If you want to fish king salmon, you'll need to purchase an additional stamp which costs $10 for the first day, $20 for three days, $30 for seven days and $50 for fourteen days.

Great Fishing Locations in Alaska

While Alaska has an abundant fish supply and some incredible fishing locations, it can often be about your timing and knowing where the fish will be. That's why a guide or tour can really help your fishing trip be a success. However, the best spots for fishing in Alaska are Kodiak Island, the Kenai River and the Copper River Delta and Bristol Bay.

Kodiak Island is known for its abundance of salmon and great roadside and float fishing. The Kenai River has massive king salmon, but they're fast and strong, making them hard to catch for a beginner fisher and not the best for float fishing.

The Copper River Delta is rich in fish, but fast, meaning it's not recommended for beginners nor really ideal for relaxed float fishing. The Kenai River has the world's biggest king salmon, but the fish are fast and powerful and the trout are minimal. Meanwhile, Kodiak Island is crammed with spawning salmon, but along with very well-fed bears.

Additional Resources

If you need additional information on Alaska float fishing, guidelines or quality charters or lodges for your fishing vacations, try the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Sport Division. Their website can be found at sf.adfg.state.ak.us and they offer a wealth of information on great fishing spots, the best seasons and recommended fishing companies and lodges.

So, you're investigating Alaska fishing vacations? Maybe wondering what to bring, where to book and how to prepare for what could be the adventure of a lifetime?

Alaska has the best fishing in the world, pristine wilderness, amazing landscapes and plentiful wildlife, so don't let poor planning spoil your vacation. Keep reading for four great tips that will make your fishing expedition a success.

Plan for Bugs

To avoid a mosquito nightmare, plan ahead by packing a high-quality mosquito net hat, long-sleeved shirts and pants free from holes. Look for clothing that offers ventilation, but has holes that are small enough to keep out the pesky bugs. You should also bring a strong, cream-based mosquito and bug repellent, and avoid depending on mosquito coils.

Pack Sunscreen

Despite the sometimes cold temperatures and rain, there are still high risks for sun damage and possible sunstroke. Keep yourself protected with long clothing and a high-quality, non-greasy and waterproof sun block. Choose an SPF higher than 30 and avoid combo bug-repellent products as these tend to wear off faster.

Book Ahead

During the peak summer tourism seasons, places like Juneau, Anchorage and Flagstaff can book up fast. The area sees over a million tourists every year, many of whom are booking their own Alaska fishing adventure - meaning hotels will fill up, recommended charters will be reserved and you'll be left wishing you had planned ahead. Don't be disappointed - book your lodgings and charters well in advance.

Always Pack a Personal Survival Kit

Whether you're on a fully catered luxury tour or a self-guided adventure expedition, you should always pack a small survival kit that can be carried in a vest or pocket at all times - in case you're separated from your pack or tour group.

The kit should include purification pills, waterproof matches, chalk to make markings, a whistle, a granola bar, fishing line and hooks and a Ziploc bag for carrying water. You can pack it all in a metal tin or can, which can also be used to boil water.

Alaska fishing vacations are the adventure of a lifetime, offering abundant fishing, beautiful wilderness and truly wild nature. You can make that trip even better and safer by following these four critical tips - book ahead, plan for bugs, safeguard against the sun and be prepared with a wilderness survival kit. These are simple preparations, take very little time, and will all enhance your fishing experience.

If you're planning a fishing vacation but debating whether the extra cost of an Alaska fly-in fishing adventure is really worth it, it is. Booking with a flight charter service or a lodge with float boat service means you can be flexible, go where the fish are, hit the remote spots, do more and see more.

Still deciding whether it's worth it? Read on for an overview of why fly-in will make your Alaskan fishing experience even better.

Follow the Fish

Most of the fish in Alaska are migratory. That means if you book at a particular lodge and the fish have already passed through or aren't there yet, you could have slow fishing all week and not much of an experience.

If you had booked a fly-in trip at a lodge that offers float boat services, you'd have the flexibility to travel to where the fishing is good. So, instead of depending on predictions, you can base your fishing on up-to-date migration information.

Because the bulk of their business is based on taking customers to the best fishing spots right "now," most flight charter companies employ naturalists or highly experienced, local staff who are dedicated to tracking fish migrations and finding you the best fishing.

Hit the Remote Spots

If you're a solitary fisherman, someone who hates competing for fish, you can't beat the fly-in experience. Instead of spending your day looking for a fishing spot that's not already occupied, you can fly in to some of the most remote and not-accessible-by-boat locations in the state.

Do More

Choosing an Alaska fly-in fishing vacation over a lodge or boat-focused trip means you can hit a lot more fishing holes. You're not as limited by time, water systems or distance - therefore, you can do more, see more and fish more.

In addition to being able to spend more time fishing, you also have greater opportunities for alternate activities like hiking, kayaking, rafting or wilderness watching. Instead of tethering yourself to one lodge and the area around it, you can easily arrange side trips and expeditions with a flight-based trip.

Flightseeing Opportunities

The best side benefit to an Alaska fly-in fishing trip is all the sightseeing opportunities. Each day, you travel to a new fishing spot, and on your way you're getting an included tour of the state's majestic beauty and wilderness.

Since Alaska has perhaps the most spectacular wilderness and scenery in the world, the view is no small bonus for the person who loves the outdoors. You can do some of the best fishing anywhere and simultaneously enjoy breath-taking views of the landscape and animals which inhabit it. It is a fishing excursion well worth the time and effort to get there.

When it comes to planning a float fishing trip, Alaska is like the Mecca of fishing spots. The views are incredible, the waters are pristine and the fish are abundant.

You'll find rivers full of fish, beautiful landscapes, great people and an incredible experience. However, before you start booking, read on for a few tips that will ensure your Alaskan fishing adventure is one to remember.

Try a Vacation Planner Service

Instead of tethering yourself to one lodge or a specific charter company, you can opt to use a trip planning service. Most Alaskan vacation planners will work within your budget, booking your trip according to when you're coming, your fishing skill level and where you can find the best fishing.

One company recommended by the Frommer's Guide to Alaska are Sport Fishing Alaska (907-344-8674). They can coordinate all your need, including your lodging and local travel options.

Be Informed

Because most of the fish in Alaska are migratory, it's so important to know when they're in season, as well as where they'll be at a specific time. Otherwise, you could find yourself staying at an empty lodge next to a river with no fish.

Probably the best information resource is the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Sport Fish Division. You can access their information at sf.adfg.state.ak.us. Their site is updated weekly with hot spots, run timing facts and general educational information on fishing in Alaska.

For region-specific information, you can click on particular areas of the state and obtain publications or guides for fishing in that locale. You can also contact the local offices by phone (numbers listed on the website) for guide or charter service recommendations.

Book in Advance

For a peak-season float fishing trip, Alaska residents and travel veterans recommend reserving your place early. The best lodges at the peak fishing times tend to book up quickly, meaning you need to be prepared and ready to reserve your place. You'll also find that port cities and airport hubs can become overcrowded with tourists, so commit to your hotel and rental car well ahead of time.

Packing List for Alaska Fishing

Alaska is all about wild temperatures - from the hot noon sun to the cold nights or pouring rain. Plan ahead by packing clothes that can be layered, will dry quickly and will wick away sweat.

Also, invest your money in a high-quality, waterproof and wind-resistant rainwear suit that's designed for fishing vacations. To ensure a comfortable and safe float fishing trip, Alaska residents know you have to pack the right clothes and be prepared.

If you're planning a fishing trip, Alaska is probably the best place in the world. The Halibut are massive, the salmon gigantic and the trout quite plentiful. For trophy-sized catches, there's no place like it anywhere in the world. So, read on for some great tips and tricks that will help make your Alaskan fishing trip a success.

Make Your Reservations Early

Between the months of June and September - the prime fishing season - Alaska sees over a million tourists. That means the hotels in Juneau won't have vacancies, the charters will be booked and your preferred fishing lodge may already be full. So, start planning now and book your trip well in advance.

Hire an Experienced Guide

Going it alone on your first Alaskan fishing trip is not recommended. A local guide will know where the best spots are, what flies or lures will work and how to catch the biggest fish. Their experience and knowledge of the area is invaluable, particularly for a first-timer.

To find a qualified local guide or charter company, try asking at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, a vacation planning company like Sport Fishing Alaska - who were featured in Frommer's and Forbe's Travel - or simply book with a lodge and use their in-house guide.

Follow the Fish

Fish may be abundant in Alaska, but they're also migratory. You need to know the best fishing season and the right locations. So, while a lodge or specific spot may boast some of the best fishing in the world, that may only hold true for a few weeks out of the year. Instead of being disappointed by a slow fishing vacation, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will be able to tell if your proposed location and dates will coincide with a fish migration.

There's also the secret fishing season in Alaska - the fall. Trout are still running, no one's around and fly fishers will experience some of the best fishing of their lives. Many river lodges and resorts specialize in an autumn season and even offer heavily discounted rates, saving you money.

Pack Smart

Remember that when you're packing for a fishing trip, Alaska can be blisteringly hot, drenching wet or freezing cold. The best advice is to pack layers of clothing that will dry quickly. You want to protect yourself from the sun, rain and cold, but also be able to remove clothing or dry it fast. Don't forget sunscreen, bug repellent, your gear, a small personal survival kit and your camera.

It is important that every human being finds an opportunity to relax and unwind from the pressures of everyday life. Fishing is one of the most popular activities in the world, and there are hundreds of thousands of anglers enjoying the sport every day.

For almost every angler there is a type of fish. Many people choose to only fish for one or two species, as they enjoy the skill development hunting that type of fish entails. All fish are different and have different habits. This is one reason that makes fishing so unique.

Some fishermen enjoy setting off on their own during their free time to see what the lakes and rivers offer. Others, however, prefer a planned fishing charter.

Fishing charters are the ideal adventure if you don’t have all the equipment needed to fish but would like to all the same. Fishing charters are not all the same though. And it is important to consider the following points before doing so.

1. Cost of the Charter

You will want to collect enough information to gain a good idea of what you get for your money. What is included in the price? What equipment will the charter provide?

If there is a payment or deposit needed before setting off on the trip, how much is it and is it refundable if you have a change of plans?

Do their costs seem reasonable to you? If so, great; if not, look elsewhere for another charter that is more suitable. Remember it is up to you to schedule the trip that you want.

2. The Length of Each Charter Trip

You should determine how long the fishing trips will last. Many captains will allow people to do extra fishing before docking. Does this cost any extra? If you are not happy with the answer, say so.

Also, if the time frame or duration on the water is liable to change, you need to know in advance. Some charters even charge by the minute. Since you are the person paying for the time, it is crucial you know what you are getting.

3. The Captain

Find out information that is available about the captain. What chartered fishing experience does he have? The more experienced he is, the more you will likely get out of your trip. Any captain should be more than happy to answer a few questions for you before you decide to opt for his charter.

These few points are very basic. However if you follow through with them, you should have a terrific fishing charter adventure!

For some fishing trips, to gain the most benefit from your time and enjoy the adventure, you may need to hire a fishing guide. Below are several tips in preparation for making that decision.

1. Ask your family members and peers if they know of a good guide. That way you will gain from their prior experience using fishing guides. By asking the advice of others you will save yourself time in choosing a good guide.

2. Look on the Internet. This could be a valuable source of fishing information. There are also fishing groups you can join online. Why not try asking a question in a forum and see if you can find a guide from there?

3. Check to make sure that your guide is licensed. If you don't do this you could end up with a guide who doesn't work according to state rules and regulations. You need to know that everything you do is legally and ethically correct. For your own peace of mind and to fish within the law, hire a licensed guide.

4. How long has your guide been a guide? You need to know the level of your guide's expertise in the types of fishing available to you. It is best to opt for someone with plenty of experience. That way you will gain the benefit of that experience and not waste any of your fishing time.

5. Make sure you know what you are paying for. Sometimes the price you pay will include everything you need from your guide to an overnight stay somewhere to all your bait.

However, at times these costs can be broken out and paid for separately. If this is the case you need to know so you can budget accordingly. You definitely do not want unanticipated expenses spoiling your trip.

6. Tell your potential fishing guide everything about your level of fishing knowledge. Do not be afraid to tell the person if you have never been fishing before. If you tell the truth you are more likely to get the kind of fishing trip that is ideal for your abilities.

7. Take the time to become friendly with your guide. This will help you in many ways. Not only will you be able to build a comfortable relationship with your guide, but you will feel at ease in each other's company. This is very important since you will be spending quite a lot of time, possibly alone, with the person on your fishing adventure. You don't want to hire a guide that you don't get along with.

If you follow these few tips, you should be able to select a terrific guide to help you with all your fishing needs.

Trying to plan an Alaska fly fishing trip? Wondering which lodge to book? Trying to decide when to go? Figuring out what to pack? For the answers to these questions and more, read on to learn how to plan a fantastic Alaskan fly fishing trip.

Obtaining a Fishing License

While most lodges or tour companies will arrange to obtain your fishing license for you, you can also order them online right from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. They offer a basic fishing license for out-of-state residents, as well as an additional stamp to go after King Salmon.

When to Go

The peak season for an Alaska fly fishing vacation is from June to September. However, the exact time you go will largely depend on the kind of fish you want and where you're going. For example, Lake Trout will thrive during the off-season, while Rainbow Trout will peter out by mid-August.

Much of it depends on where you are and your timing. For a complete fish run timing chart, check with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

For a non-resident, fishing licenses start at $20 for a day, $35 for two days, $55 for seven days, $80 for fourteen days and $145 for a full year. However, non-resident military personnel only pay $24 for a full year.

Booking a Lodge or Charter

If fishing is the primary reason for your Alaska trip, most experts recommend booking your stay at a fishing lodge. The remote areas of Bristol Bay are teeming with lodges that can only be accessed by float plane.

Unfortunately, if you're not there during the peak period of the local salmon run, you may be faced with slow fishing and a waste of money. Alternatively, choosing the right time and place but not booking ahead means you could lose out.

So, how do you know where the fish are or where they'll be? Frommer's travel guide, a respected and international travel guide company, recommends making your reservations through a local travel or fishing tour company. They endorse Sport Fishing Alaska specifically - available by phone at 1-888-552-8674.

The company is unique as they are an advocate for the angler, helping you book your Alaska fly fishing trip based on where the fishing is good, plentiful and timely. They'll also work within any budget and for a small advance fee of just $95.

A fishing expedition in Alaska is one of the most thrilling adventures a true angler will ever experience. Because for many it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you sure don't want to lose time spent on planning the trip after you've already arrived at your destination. Taking advantage of some of the services mentioned above will help to ensure you are able make best use of your precious time on the water.

Alaska fishing trips are popular for a reason - the pristine state offers hundreds of thousands of square miles of fresh streams, beautiful coastline, glaciers and forests. The fish are massive, the trips are sure to be a success and there's always an adventure for everyone.

However, here in the wilds, your experience is a personal one. So, keep reading for three trips that appeal to every kind of traveler - the family man, the adventurer and the angler.

For the Family Trip - Emerald Pines Lodge

Located just above Kachemak Bay, the halibut fishing capital of the world, is Emerald Pines Lodge. You can contact Emerald Pines Lodge for details.

Kachemak Bay offers world-class Alaska fishing trips for king salmon, Alaskan halibut, rainbow trout and Arctic char - some of the best on the planet. For a six-night package, rates typically hover around $2850 per adult with a 50 percent discount for children. The lodge is also all-inclusive. That means you just need to pack your toiletries and clothes.

Big Adventure - The Copper River Valley

The Klutina River has some of the most plentiful king salmon fishing in the world. Anglers will do battle with 30- to 50-pound king salmons that are hooked in a current which pushes along at 5 to 15 mph. The rapids and flow are fast, meaning you have to fish quickly and efficiently. Alongside volcanoes and mountains, this is some of the wildest fishing in the world.

In addition to testing your fishing skills on the mighty Klutina, you can also explore nearby Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the biggest preserve in the United States. Between your fishing expeditions or after a long day, you can simply relax and take in the majestic view.

The ideal time for fishing vacations here is from June to September, with July being the best month for king salmon. Try a recommended charter company like Copper River Salmon Charters or a lodge like the Orca Adventure Lodge.

An Angler's Paradise - Middleton

Angling in Alaska's blue waters is about strength of both mind and body. On Middleton Island, just 90 miles north of Seward, the average halibut ranges from 80 to 160 pounds. The fishing is considered some of the best in the world.

The ideal season for Middleton, Alaska fishing expeditions is June to September. Costs will depend on your charter company, but it typically ranges between $700 and $800 per angler for two days. Cracker Jack Charters is a popular company to coordinate a trip.

Alaska is full of fishing adventure for both the serious and casual outdoorsman. You could spend a week or even a month on the crisp Alaska waters and still not feel that your time there is complete. There are many options among which you can choose - the three described above simply represent a few of the memorable ones.

If you're considering hiring Alaska fishing guides to enhance your Alaskan fishing trip adventure, you've already made a great decision. Charters and guides typically know the waters, fish migrations and great strategies to ensure you'll come home with a trophy-sized catch.

But, like any business, there are good guides and bad ones. So, how do you know the difference? How do you find a great fishing guide or charter company? Should you go with a group fishing vacation or book privately? For hints and tips on how to choose an Alaskan fishing guide, keep reading.

Check References

Ask for the phone numbers or email addresses of former clients. Tell them you'd simply like to check their references. Remember, you could be spending several thousand dollars for a private, chartered and guided fishing service, so requesting references should be automatic.

In addition to verifying references from former clients, you can also try a quick phone call to the local tourism office. Remember, Alaska may be big, but it has small communities. Ideally, you want to hire Alaska fishing guides that are not only known by their tourism office, but also recommended.

Check Crew Qualifications

Before you arrive or upon arrival, you can ask to see the crew's licenses and certifications. These can be faxed ahead of time or presented to you before departure. You also want to look for a crew that has a lot of experience in Alaskan waters and a strong understanding of the area.

Hire and Experienced, Local Guide

The best Alaskan guides and tour operators are either Alaska-born or long-time citizens with an impressive resume of local work experience. Remember, you're hiring a guide because of their knowledge of the area and fishing waters - so look for one that has a proven track record.

A great way to check a guide's success is to ask for their catch track record. How many fish are caught on each trip? What are the average weights? What's their overall success rate? Remember to ask about their safety record too.

Check What's Included and What's Extra

Many Alaska fishing guides will include extra perks like lunches, fish processing and freezing, equipment, licenses, bait and tackle. However, some won't - so, it's important to find out what is and is not included in your fishing expedition before you book.

Most people only find the opportunity for an Alaska fishing trip adventure once in a lifetime. That being the case, you want to ensure that any guide you select is knowledgeable, professional, service-oriented, and has a wealth of experience on the Alaskan waters.

Your chances of catching an incredible King Salmon or a trophy-size Rainbow Trout will be greatly increased by booking the services of Alaska fishing charters or tour guides. They know the waters, the location of the fish, and the best strategies for catching them.

So, if you're planning an upcoming fishing trip to Alaska, whether for fly fishing or otherwise, keep reading for an overview of some of the best fishing tour companies in the state.

Puffin Alaska Fishing Charters

With fishing grounds that include the majestic Resurrection Bay, Montague Island, Nuka Bay, Prince William Sound and even Kenai Fjords National Park, Puffin is able to offer both incredible fishing and beautiful sights.

The company has 23 years of experience in chartered fishing trips and prides itself on its fast fishing boats, top of the line equipment and quality personalized service. Puffin specializes in halibut, salmon, lingcod and rockfish sport fishing.

Alaska NW Charters and the Caledonia

Life aboard the Alaskan Caledonia is slightly different than your typical fishing charter boat. It's a luxury yacht that can sleep 8. Private groups are treated to chef-prepared 5-star meals, a personal fishing guide, an on-board naturalist, an accommodating hostess and, of course - their captain. That's a great reason this high-end company was recently featured in National Geographic magazine.

One of the biggest misconceptions about a private yacht charter is that it's prohibitively expensive. But, what most fishing vacation travelers don't realize is that the cost of chartering a private yacht, including crew, is typically the same as booking cabins aboard a cruise ship - only you don't have to share with 2000 other passengers or pay extra for off-shore activities.

The Saltwater Safari Company

Saltwater Safari Company is known for its service and affordable rates that start at around $200 for a half-day and go up to $325 for a full day of both halibut and salmon fishing. The company also offers exclusive group bookings for privacy or large groups.

Keep in mind though that licenses, meals and fish processing will all cost extra. However, like most Alaska fishing charter companies, Saltwater provides bait, tackle and filleting - a nice benefit.

There are literally hundreds of Alaska fishing charters, and while these three represent a solid cross-section based on price, value and quality of service - there's an abundance of options beyond them. When choosing a company, always ask for references from previous customers, a rundown of their catch or success record, and the qualifications of their crew.

We live on a lake in central Minnesota. This lake is one of the premiere fishing lakes in the state. Many people come here on day and week fishing trips. Most people bring their own boats, but there are others that go out on launch trips or hire one of the many private fishing guides to take them out fishing. This allows for business opportunities for many people that live on the lake, but people should make sure that the fishing guides that are hired know the lake as well as the feeding patterns of the fish.

We had fished this lake for many years prior to buying our home. My husband had been fishing here when he was a young boy. With the modern technology of GPS and lake mapping on marine electronics, it is very easy to find different depths and fishing spots on the lake. After we had lived on the lake for a year my husband contacted one of the local fishing guides and asked if he could enter some his fishing spots on the lake on his GPS. This particular guide has been very successful on the lake. He told my husband that he did not want to share the fishing spots because he did not want a lot of other people fishing where he was. My husband mentioned this to a friend of ours that owns the local bait shop. The bait shop owner laughed and told my husband that this particular guide does not know how to use GPS and so he does not own a unit, which is why he did not share any of the fishing spots. The bait shop owner told us that there are no requirements to pass in order to be considered a guide. He said that many of the people that advertise their services as fishing guides simply take people out in their boats and hope to catch some fish. Some people are more successful at this than others, but there are no requirements.

I was surprised by this information. If I was going to a lake to fish I would assume that the people that are listed as fishing guides would have safety training and other certification in order to take others out onto the lake. You do have to have coast guard training if you have a launch or a boat over thirty five feet, but there are many guides that have twenty foot boats that take people out fishing. This was disappointing to my husband because one of his retirement dreams was to be a guide on the lake. Now that we live here we realize that there are more than enough people already offering to guide. I told my husband that we should look into having an actual service that would provide a more special outing than just a day in a fishing boat. We are going to plan a business around the adventure of fishing rather than just advertising guide services.

Taking Safety into Account

When you are fishing with children one of the most important considerations is safety. You need to assess what type of fishing you are going to be doing. There are so many different variations of fishing options, and you need to make sure you select one that is suitable for the children you will be bringing along.

Regardless of how strong a swimmer your children may be, they must use life jackets. Additionally, it is imperative that you have a first aid kit with you. We all know, after all, how easy it is for children to become scratched or cut by hooks and other parts of fishing gear.

Buying Appropriate Fishing Equipment

To give your child that special sense of ownership, purchase each his or her own box for fishing tackle. If part of your goal is to develop in them a love for the sport, having a child-size version of an adult's fishing gear will allow them to take responsibility for something that is theirs.

You don’t have to spend too much with this. Simply purchase a few essentials to start with, and as their interest grows, they can decide what they would like to add to their collection.

Kids Can Take Charge

Once a fish taken the bait on your child's line, allow him or her the greater role in reeling it in. Certainly you should drop what you're doing and instead be available to assist as needed. However your child will experience a real sense of accomplishment by engaging in the battle to pull his catch into the boat or onshore.

Capturing your children's attention and interest with fishing during their youngest years will instill within them an early enjoyment. Plus the skills learned during their childhoods will last a lifetime as their knowledge grows.

Additionally, the older kids become, the harder it is for them to view and appreciate what is involved in cleaning and preparing a fish. Rather than becoming repulsed at the sight, they can learn to assist. Learning the rules of the sport will be engrained as well when taught at an earlier age.

Preventing Boredom

Of course, not every child will become as enthralled with fishing adventures as you. We're all different, and their interests will vary. However, there are specific factors about a fishing trip than can distract them. The sun might be particularly hot, the fish not biting, or flying insects bothersome.

This could result in your children becoming bored. If this happens don’t loose heart. Let your children know that this not unusual when fishing. You never know, you could turn their initial disappointment into a plus as your children may become more excited about finally catching a fish next time.

Children love to feel as though are in charge of doing almost anything, and fishing is ideal for this. Fishing is a great learning adventure, and doing this together should prove to be a wonderful experience.

The age old question among fisherman..."What's better; a fancy bass fishing trip to some exotic location or simply sitting out in your boat on a quiet waterway somewhere in the States?"

It's a tough question. Hardened bass fisherman will usually go with the latter as the experience of sitting on a quiet lake somewhere with only the sounds of nature to worry about and then to have the silence broken by the thrashing of man's greatest foe, the bass is unbeatable.

Taking Bass Fishing Trips

A bass fishing trip to exotic places however, are hard to beat especially if you want guaranteed success. Mexico offers some excellent fishing options in the way of guided tours and the promise of snagging the biggest bass in the world. That's pretty hard to say no to.

The old school bass fisherman will say living in ritzy hotels for a week and going out on guided tours getting waited on hand and foot is not the way to enjoy the thrill of catching bass.

We say..."hold on guys and gals...whatever you think is a fair thing then stick to it!"

Phew! We're glad that little argument is over. Or is it? One of the attractions of a bass fishing trip is the ability to put a boat in the water. Devoted bass fishermen will tell you it's not the same when you are taken out on a fancy craft and told where to thrown your line.

The Serenity Of Being In Your Own Boat!

When you are able to put your own boat in the water you are in control; you need to seek out the good fishing spots but above all, the tranquility of the setting you choose makes all the difference.

Then your peace gives way to excitement, and rightfully so. You are here for action, and there is no greater action in the world than the battle and the struggle between a man and the fish on his fishing line. Without this struggle, a bass fishing trip would be meaningless and frankly, life would be meaningless to many of us. For many, taking a fishing trip is not just another weekend away; it is a rite of passage and a religious experience.

Just a man and his greatest enemy, the bass. That sounds pretty good to me.

For a lot of people, ocean fishing is the ultimate thrill. You see, nowadays more people grow up around lakes and rivers than around the ocean. Freshwater fishing is something that we all take for granted. With most lakes and rivers, you can stand on the shore, wade out in the water, or even take a boat with relative safety. The ocean, however, means adventure.

The biggest freshwater fish do not compare to some of those monsters they have in the ocean, and even some of the worst storms on the great lakes are nothing compared to how things can get on the ocean when the weather turns rotten. Ocean fish often have lower concentrations of mercury and other contaminants, making them safer to eat in large quantities than many freshwater fish. Nonetheless, for my money, freshwater fishing is still a better activity. Nothing in the world beats it.

Of course, I might be a little bit sentimental because of how I was raised. You might say that freshwater fishing is in my blood. My father was an excellent fly fisherman, and in fact he made a lot of money giving fly fishing tours and selling fishing tackle to both locals and tourists from out of town. Although we were taught to look down on line fishing, we still did a fair amount from time to time.

Fly fishing is great, but there is so much variety to freshwater fishing that it is a shame to limit yourself to just one activity. Although the actual fishing isn't exactly as exciting, lake fishing still has some advantages over fishing in a stream. There is nothing like spending a day out on the water, casting off again and again from a boat as the waves gently rock you.

One of the greatest things about freshwater fishing is that you don't need an expert to guide you. If you are going fishing in the ocean, you definitely need some expert advice. Just staying safe can be difficult on the ocean! With small lakes and rivers, by contrast, the worst you will do is not catch any fish. And while things look more or less the same once you are out on the ocean, every mile of a lake or river is different. When you go on a freshwater fishing trip, you have an opportunity to seem some of the best scenery anywhere. And all that while catching delicious fish!

Fishing Trips

My husband and I have been married over twenty years. We have a strong healthy relationship and still enjoy each other’s company after all these years. We enjoy doing thing together, but we also have our own interests and activities. We take vacations together but we also take separate vacations with friends. My husband has gone on fishing trips with buddies since before we were married. He has gone to a variety of lakes and some times they camp and other times they stay in cabins or lodges. This year he wanted to do one of his fishing trips for our vacation.

I enjoy fishing. We go out fishing together often, but I did not know if I wanted to spend a week fishing. He told me that he has always wanted to go to this lake in Canada where you can only reach the cabins by boat. Several of his buddies have gone on similar fishing trips and they report that it is very relaxing and the fishing is fantastic. My husband assured me that we would have a nice cabin with electricity and running water. I reluctantly agreed to go on the fishing adventure. I rationalized to myself that I still had an additional three weeks of vacation coming so I could do something fun with a girl friend later in the summer.

We drove twelve hours to get to the base camp. There were several vehicles parked in the parking area. The signs were advertising fishing trips of a life time. The office was only large enough for two people to be in at once. As my husband got the keys and the map to find our cabin I walked around the marina and looked at the gorgeous lake. It was five in the afternoon, we had been sitting in the car since five in the morning, and I was ready to get settled in the cabin. I started to take the cover off the boat so we could load in the supplies that we would be taking with us to the island cabin. We were staying a week so we had groceries for a week as well as our clothes and fishing gear. By the looks of the base camp I was not expecting much of a cabin.

My husband arrived back at the boat and truck with a map and keys. He said that it would take us a half hour to get to the cabin by boat. We finished packing all the gear and landed the boat and secured the vehicle. When we arrived at the island I thought we must have made a mistake. There was a beautiful log cabin nestled in pine trees. It was the only building on the island. The cabin was two years old and had a generator for hot water electricity and heat. It was beautifully decorated. I told my husband that now I know why he has been taking fishing trips all these years. He assured me that all of his accommodations have not been this nice. We had a wonderful time and I am sure that my future holds additional fishing trips.
