The Walters PP has a barrel slightly longer then the PPK & PPKS, Why did they make this pistol.?

The Walther PP was the first pistol designed, back before WW2, where here in the USA most folks were packing 6 shot revolvers, 357 magnums weren't around yet, and many people were still using 32longs!. Back in the days it was designed, people had different ideas of what level of power and capacity was sufficient. Also, people in general had less access to ballistic data, fewer studies had been done.

Many people thought that a 32long or 32acp was fine for a pocket gun, or thought that 38 special and 380 were just dandy.

So Walther designed the PP with the basic 1930's mindset as a general purpose civilian and police officer pistol. It was the german equivalent of a 3-4" barreled 38 special as found on most US policemen at the time. It worked fine in it's roll.

The PPK came later as a more compact model for detectives, basically the German equivalent of a snubnose revolver

The PPK/S only exists to meet US importation laws, of which the PPK was to small to fall under the sporting arms catagory
