Could a cop carry a 19th century revolver or shotgun on patrol as his standard weapon?
Do you basically decide what weapon you can use so long as you pay for it? I would become a cop if I could use an old fashioned revolver, perhaps a single action colt army or an earlier firearm.
Don't mock me for my choice, at least my gun won't jam like your foolish modern semi automatics. I'm a very old fashioned person.
A lot of Officers carry revolvers as their backup choice. Hammerless, and very dependable. 99.999% of the time, the Officers actual duty weapon is furnished by the department. They have no choice in the matter.
While I am also a revolver enthusiast, I must personally and professionally disagree with your reasoning. My duty weapon is a Glock 22, .40 caliber. I have put well over 5000 rounds through it with not one single jam, misfeed, stove pipe or the like. Your choice of a revolver limits you, as a Cop, in a couple ways. First, you are limited to six shots before you need a reload. Tactically speaking, this is not the position to be in while engaged in a fire fight. You need shots down range, and stopping to reload a single action revolver greatly decreases your ability to win the fight, and also to live through it.
The second reason for semi-autos in LE work, is interchangeability in magazines. The Glock Model 22 constitutes a huge majority of issued duty weapons. As such, if I were to go and aid another Officer, or an Officer from a different LE entity- chances are that I can give them loaded ammo from my gun and vice versa. Also, I can, if needed, put 46 (15+15+15+1 in the pipe) down range in a heartbeat. With a revolver, I can put 6 whole bullets down range, before I must physically open the gun and manually load (or even a speed loader) more bullets. Too much dedication to fine motor skills which tend to go out the window during a high stress encounter.
The revolver is a fantastic weapon, don't get me wrong! But in today's day and age, it serves no function as a primary duty weapon.
Referring to Semi-autos as "foolish modern" weapons shows that you do not know alot about modern firearms, or modern policing. I'm not saying this to disrespect you, but rather to point out that there are many reasons we no longer carry revolvers. Do some research on modern LE/Military hand guns. You will understand.
Best regards.
