cutting shotgun barrel from 28 to 18 1/2 inches is it legal?
I have a old 12 gauge single shot shotgun at home with a 28 inch barrel and was wondering if I could cut the barrel down to 18 1/2 inches I only paid $60 for the gun so cutting it would be cheaper than buying a new 18 1/2 inch barrel. Would it be legal even though its a "Sawed Off Shotgun" but the barrel is legal length I am going to use it for snakes and plinking.
18" is legal-go closer to 19 to be safe. The BATF will measure barrel length from the breech face to the end of the barrel. Make a mark 18 inches from the end of a wooden dowel and drop it down the barrel, letting it hit the breech face. If the mark is inside the barrel after you cut it, you're legal. That's how they'll measure it.
