Magnum primers for reloading the 357 magnum?
I am new to reloading. Just bought a press and created my first 38 special rounds yesterday. The gentleman at Gander Mountain sold me two kinds of primers; standard and magnum. He informed me to use the standard primers for 38 specials and the magnum primers for 357 magnum.
But I've been reading in a Lee reloading manual that says to only use magnum primers if the recipe calls for it. (I haven't yet found a recipe for Alliant Bullseye gunpowder that calls for magnum powders.)
Was the guy that sold me the magnum primers incorrect?
Are there any recipes that use magnum primers with alliant bullseye powder for 38 special / 357 magnum?
Thanks!!
ps: I tried out the 38 specials I loaded. They worked great but now I have the dilemma of deciding which is funner: shooting or reloading.
Cholsin,
Welcome to the world of reloading, and I think you summed it up in your last sentence--I think you are hooked!
Don't worry too much about the magnum primer issue. I have been reloading the .357 and .44 Magnums for almost 30 years with Winchester primers. The Winchester primers are for 'Standard or Magnum' loads as specified on the box.
I have used pretty stout loads in each and have never had an issue.
Just make sure you follow the 'recipe' in the reloading books, work up your own loads safely and have fun!
Regards,
Tim
