Rifle Stock
can you use yaught varnish to seal your rifle stock?
i have a walnut rifle stock and want to seal it from the elements. is it ok to just put some yaught varnish or any other water proof varnish on the stock.
I would not use yacht varnish, which is, by definition, marine grade. It's going to leave a hard and durable finish, but it won't let the grain of the wood show through. If you just want to seal it, and don't care about looks, then it's fine (and this idea is nothing to look down on). Make sure to get the satin or flat grade so it isn't shiny.
I would suggest, instead, that you rub the stock with tung oil, and not apply a final seal coat. I did this with my .243 over 20 years ago, and have had it in the rain plenty of times with no problems.
