(Sorry, this got really long but it's worth reading.....)

Yes, I have done several sporter Mosin builds on ATI stocks and I have more Mosins than I care to describe in public, both rare and common and I have modified some to sporters.

M38s were almost all subjected to WWII (built 1938 to 1943). I don't know if you understand the situation in the USSR at that time, but they were literally fighting tooth and nail for survival against the Nazi invasion and it was desperate. Overwhelming odds are, this rifle saw combat and who knows how many Red Army patriots hands held it.

The decision to sporterize it or leave in in it's military and historical configuration is up to you. I just want you to make an informed decision.

Now, how does the rifle shoot right now? Can you hit a paper plate at 100 yards most of the time? Do you shoot from a bench rest or shooting bags to do this? If it shoots bad now, no sense in spending any money of accessories for a rifle that will not shoot! Find out first!

Many of the M38s I have seen are "counterbored". Here's how to tell..

UNLOAD THE RIFLE AND REMOVE THE BOLT. Now, look in the muzzle end, carefully looking at the first few inches. You will see the 'spirals' in the barrel, that's the "lands and grooves" and they will either (1) go all the way to the muzzle, or (2) stop about two inches inside the muzzle.

If it is #2 it's 'counterbored' and while it's not the end of the world, I would not spend any money on this rifle to make it a sporter unless you plan on changing the barrel. And changing the barrel on a Mosin is just silly, as there are millions of post-WWII M44s that are brand new that you can get for under $90.

One question I need to have answered to help you is, where are you going with this?

Do you plan on building a full blown sporter rifle out of your Mosin, in a configuration like a modern hunter? (Sporting stock, scope mount, scope, extended bent bolt handle, trigger modification, etc.)

Or, as is popular, a sport rifle that is a "Scout" style rifle? (Again sporter stock, but with a forward mounted 'both eyes open' scope setup)

Or, do you just want something different because you think your stock is ugly now? If this is the case, just do a little work and strip that nasty Russian Shellac off there (that stuff was NOT original, btw, that was slapped on in a warehouse in storage) I can give detailed instructions on stripping and let me tell you, there is some beautiful wood inside there if you work a little.

The ATI stock.

Well, it's plastic and you are going to want to deal with the shiny plastic finish. Leaving it "as is" is an option but not a good one.

Krylon has a great plastic polymer paint called "Fusion" and now it's available in Camo colors. I did an ATI stock in olive green recently and now that it is cured (7 days) it will not chip or flake off the layer of plastic it's bonded to. You need to prep the stock first with paint thinner and very fine steel wool and spray on the Fusion. I don't like Camo guns.... but green or brown or kakhi look good.

Before you finish it, you need to fit it very good first. the stock cannot touch the barrel anywhere. If it does, like Boker says, you need to carefully grind away until it doesn't. You will also want the part of the stock that mates with your receiver action to be tight, very tight. You may need to build it up to get that.

Now, what is that ATI stock cost...$60, $70? Take a look at what you can get for $79.62 from Boyd's gunstocks (First link). You need to finish it, but some very lingt sanding and a nice oil finish and this puppy will look sweet!
