Every year on 23rd October, Thais take a national holiday to commemorate the death of one of the most revered kings of the past; Chulalongkorn. Chulalongkorn was one of the most important figureheads in Thai history, and the day is taken to commemorate the day of his death.

History of Chulalongkorn Day

After the death of King Mongkut, Chulalongkon ascended to the throne. He was the son of King Mongkut. His official name is Rama V, and he became a king at the young age of only 15. Rama V refers to him being the 5th monarch of Siam (as it was then called).

King Chulalongkorn’s long reign of 42-years was dedicated to full-scale reforms as he ushered Thailand into the 19th century. One important move was to incorporate a western style government into Thailand. He made friends with major powers such as Britain, France, America and Russia and sent his children to be educated in the West.

The King pushed for the abolition of slavery, the construction of railways, the establishment of post and telegraph services and the creation of a ministerial system in 1892. Health and education were two other areas that he saw about improving.During the age of colonialism, the King had to adapt his foreign policy to maintain a balance between the opposing powers. By fostering good relations with other countries – particularly the bigger colonial powers – he was able to maintain Thailand's independence throughout this difficult time.

His death on October 23, 1910 was a great loss to the entire nation as he was one of the most honored and beloved kings who were often called “Somdej Phra Piyamaharaj”.
