Reloading and cocking a single action, and double action semi-auto pistol?
What is the difference between loading and cocking a single action semi-auto, and a double action semi auto pistol? It always confused me, so can someone put it in layman's terms?
Thanks for the help. I still think I like revolvers better though. Never jam.
Double-Action means that the trigger performs two separate and distinct actions with each pull of the trigger.
First, of all, it moves the hammer from the at rest possition to the full-c-o-c-k position.
Second, it moves trips the sear and permits the hammer to fall on the firing pin and fire the cartridge in the chamber.
In a traditional DA/SA semi-automatic pistol, the firing of the first shot causes the pistol to revert to Single Action mode.
That means that when the first shot is fired, recoil causes the slide to move backward, extracting and ejecting the fired cartridge case, c-o-c-king the hammer and chambering a fresh cartridge. That leaves the hammer at full c-o-c-k and ready to fire with a light single-action trigger pull.
In order to make use of single-action capability for the first shot, one either does not use the hammer dropping safety after chambering the first round in a fresh magazine, or one used his thumb to manually c-o-c-k the hammer prior to the first shot. Some people do this because they shoot more accurately Single-Action than they do Double-Action
