Michigan... Do Police offers have to separately have a CPL or CCW type license for off duty concealed carry?

Ok I am going to be working in Law Enforcement within 2 yrs. I have thought about getting my CPL/CCW first after my training is done and academy is complete... I will apply to police depts for a job... when I am employed with a police dept. will that automatically allow me to carry concealed off duty?

I plan on carrying a j frame revolver in an ankle holster and an HK p30 at 4:00 IWB

thanks ahead of time

As a state certified Peace Officer, you will have the right to carry an off duty weapon.

Here's the tricky part.

Your department may require you to qualify with that weapon, they may have a specific list of weapons they'll allow you to carry off duty and as a back up, you may not be allowed to carry a BU until you're off probation. And no doubt you'll be qualifying several times annually with both your on duty any off duty weapons you carry.

Basically, it's up in the air.

I'd go for the CCW now, carry your weapon until you are hired, THEN find out what THAT department's policies are on off duty carry, back up weapons, etc.

These are all true at the department I work for.
